The Parish of Montijo is a former Portuguese parish in the Municipality of Montijo, a parish that had an area of 26.34 km² and 29,908 inhabitants, and therefore had a population density of 1,135.5 inhabitants/km².
The history of the municipality of Montijo is intensely linked to the Tagus River since a large area of its territory is delimited by it.
Favorable natural conditions have been at the origin of human presence since the Paleolithic; This is proven by archaeological testimonies found in the region.
In the genesis of the municipality of Aldeia Galega is the largest municipality of Ribatejo, dating back to the XVIII century. With Law No. 22/2012 of May 30 and Law No. 11-A/2013 of January 28, the municipality of Montijo is now composed of five parishes and unions of parishes: Union of Parishes of Atalaia and Alto Estanqueiro-Jardia; Parish of Canha; Union of Parishes Montijo and Afonsoeiro; Union of Parishes of Pegões and Parish of Sarilhos Grandes.
